IPTV and cable side by side
Neither one wins every row. The table sets out what each side actually gives you, including the rows where cable is the stronger choice.
| Cable TV | IPTV | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | A package price plus equipment rental, quoted before tax. See the Bell table below. | One prepaid price. Apollo Group TV is $19.99 USD for one month on one device. |
| Commitment | Usually a two-year term with an early cancellation charge. | No term. You prepay for a plan length and it simply ends if you do not renew. |
| Equipment | A rented receiver, or the provider's app on a supported device. | A device you already own: Firestick, Android TV, smart TV, phone or computer. |
| Installation | Self-install or a technician visit, depending on the address. | Install a player app and enter a login. No visit. |
| Delivery | The provider's own managed network, with capacity reserved for TV. | The public internet. Picture quality depends on your connection and Wi-Fi. |
| Licensing | A regulated distributor that holds Canadian carriage rights for every channel in the package. | Varies by service. The law turns on whether a service holds the rights to what it carries, and it is on you to check. |
| Refunds and billing | Monthly billing in arrears, with a regulator and a complaints body behind it. | Paid up front. Refunds are limited once a subscription is active, so use the trial first. |
| Recording | Cloud PVR, usually as a paid add-on. | Depends on the player app and your own storage. |

What IPTV costs
IPTV is sold as a prepaid subscription for a fixed length, priced by how many screens can play at the same time. Apollo Group TV's plans, in US dollars:
| Plan length | Price, one device (USD) |
|---|---|
| 1 Month | $19.99 |
| 3 Months | $29.99 |
| 6 Months | $39.99 |
| 12 Months + 2 FREE | $69.99 |
Extra screens are discounted (2 devices −20% · 3 devices −25% · 4 devices −30%). There is no equipment to rent and no installation charge. The costs people forget are their own: a streaming device if the TV has no suitable app, and an internet plan fast enough for the number of screens in use.
The two price lists are in different currencies and are not directly comparable to the cent, so no saving figure is quoted here. For the full picture see what IPTV costs and the Apollo Group TV plans and pricing page, where the 12 Months + 2 FREE plan is $69.99.
Where cable is the better choice
- You want certainty about rights. A cable company is a licensed distributor. With IPTV the answer depends on the service, and IPTV law in Canada, the USA and the UK explains what to look for.
- Your internet is slow or unstable. Cable TV does not compete with the rest of the household for bandwidth. IPTV does.
- You rely on a cloud PVR. Recording on IPTV depends on the player and your own storage.
- You want a bill you can dispute. Cable is billed monthly in arrears by a regulated company. IPTV is paid in advance.
Where IPTV is the better choice
- You do not want a term contract. A plan runs for the length you paid for and stops.
- You already own the devices. There is no receiver per room to rent.
- You move, travel or rent. The login works on any connection, with no installation at the address.
- You have a solid connection. On wired or strong Wi-Fi with headroom, the delivery gap narrows.
How to switch without paying twice
- Find the end date of your cable term and the early cancellation charge on your bill or account page.
- Check whether dropping TV changes the price of your internet bundle.
- Test IPTV on your own connection before cancelling anything, at the hour you normally watch. Apollo Group TV offers a 24-hour trial for this.
- Keep cable until the trial has run through an evening of ordinary viewing on every TV in the house.
- If you cancel, return rented equipment as the provider instructs and keep the receipt.
IPTV vs cable questions, answered
Is IPTV cheaper than cable TV in Canada?
On the monthly price, yes. Bell's Fibe TV tiers with sports run from CA$60.00/mo regular upward before equipment rental and tax, on a two-year term. IPTV subscriptions are prepaid with no term; Apollo Group TV is $19.99 USD for one month. Price is not the whole comparison, though: the two differ on licensing, reliability and consumer protection.
Is IPTV as reliable as cable?
Not inherently. Cable TV runs on the provider's own network with capacity set aside for it. IPTV travels over the public internet, so it is only as steady as your connection, your Wi-Fi and the service's servers at busy times. A wired connection and enough bandwidth close most of the gap, but they do not remove it.
Can I keep my internet if I cancel cable TV?
Yes. TV and internet are separate services even when billed together, and IPTV needs the internet to stay. Check your bundle terms first: dropping TV can end a bundle discount on the internet, and a term contract carries an early cancellation charge that is worked out per month remaining.
Do I need a cable box for IPTV?
No. IPTV plays through an app on a device you already own, such as a Firestick, an Android TV or Google TV box, a smart TV, a phone or a computer. There is no receiver to rent and nothing to return if you stop.
Is IPTV legal in Canada?
IPTV as a technology is legal. Whether a particular service is lawful depends on whether it holds the Canadian rights to the channels it carries. A cable company is a licensed distributor. IPTV services vary, and this page takes no position on any of them; our guide to IPTV law explains how to check.
What does cable give you that IPTV does not?
A regulated provider with carriage rights for every channel, delivery on a managed network, a cloud PVR, monthly billing in arrears, and a complaints body if something goes wrong. If those matter more to you than price and flexibility, cable is the better fit.
