Fix 1: First: Confirm the VPN is the Problem

Before adjusting anything, confirm the VPN is causing the issue.

Fix 2: Switch to a US VPN Server

Connecting to a VPN server outside the US routes your traffic through a different country, adding latency and sometimes triggering geo-restrictions.

Fix 3: Switch to WireGuard Protocol

OpenVPN carries more overhead than newer protocols. WireGuard is lighter and usually gives higher throughput with lower latency, which suits streaming.

Fix 4: Use Split Tunneling (Recommended Long-Term Fix)

Split tunneling is the most lasting fix: the IPTV app connects directly, at your line's normal speed, while your other apps stay on the VPN.

  1. 1In your VPN app, go to Settings → Split Tunneling (or App Exclusions).

Fix 5: Check for DNS Leaks and VPN Kill Switch Conflicts

Some VPN kill switches and DNS configurations block IPTV traffic even when connected.

  1. 1Disable your VPN's Kill Switch temporarily and test IPTV.
  2. 2If it works, your kill switch was blocking IPTV traffic — add IPTV app to the kill switch exceptions.

For IPTV, on the device is usually better. A VPN set up on the router sends every device in the house through the tunnel, and most routers have far less processing power than a phone or streaming stick, so encryption becomes the bottleneck and every stream slows down at once.

Running the VPN app on the device keeps the choice per screen: you can protect a laptop while the TV streams directly, and you get split tunneling, which most router setups cannot offer. A router VPN only makes sense for devices that cannot run a VPN app at all, and then only on a router fast enough to carry the full speed of your connection.

How Do You Measure How Much the VPN Slows IPTV?

Run the same speed test on the streaming device twice, once with the VPN off and once with it on, a few minutes apart. The gap between the two download results is what the VPN costs you.
