Where the TV guide comes from
The channel list and the programme guide are two separate files. The channel list says where each stream is. The guide, in a format called XMLTV, says what is on each channel and when. A player joins the two using an identifier attached to every channel in the list.
That is why the login format matters. An Xtream Codes login hands the player both files from one server. An M3U playlist hands over the channel list alone, so the guide needs its own address. If you are not sure which one you have, M3U vs Xtream Codes explains how to tell them apart.
Do you need to add anything at all?
| Player | Guide loads on its own? |
|---|---|
| TiviMate | Yes, with an Xtream Codes or portal login |
| IPTV Smarters Pro | Yes, with an Xtream Codes login |
| XCIPTV Player | Yes, with an Xtream Codes login |
| Kodi (PVR IPTV Simple Client) | No, the guide address is always entered by hand |
| Perfect Player | No, the guide address is always entered by hand |
| MAG box | Yes, through the portal |
| VLC | No guide grid. VLC plays the streams in a playlist but does not read XMLTV guide files. |
The XMLTV guide address
On services that run an Xtream Codes panel, the guide address is built from the same three values as your login:
http://SERVER:PORT/xmltv.php?username=YOUR_USERNAME&password=YOUR_PASSWORD
Replace the three placeholders with your own details and keep the port number. The address contains your password, so treat it like one. If it returns an empty page, ask support for the correct guide address instead of trying variations.
EPG setup steps by player
TiviMate
- With an Xtream Codes login the guide source is already attached: open Settings, then EPG, and choose Update EPG to load it now.
- With an M3U playlist, open Settings, then EPG, then EPG sources, choose Add source and paste the XMLTV address.
- Open Settings, then Playlists, select your playlist, open its EPG source setting and confirm the source you added is selected.
- Back in Settings, then EPG, set the update interval so the guide refreshes daily without you asking.
IPTV Smarters Pro
- Log in with the Xtream Codes API option; the guide is requested from the same server.
- Open Live with EPG from the home screen. If the app offers to install or update the guide, accept and wait for the download to finish.
- Programme titles then appear beside each channel in Live TV.
- If you added the account as an M3U playlist, the app has no automatic guide for it. Remove it and add it again with the Xtream Codes option.
XCIPTV Player
- Sign in with the server address, username and password.
- The app downloads the guide on first launch; let that first load finish before judging it.
- Use the refresh option in the app's settings to reload the guide after the service changes its channel list.
Kodi (PVR IPTV Simple Client)
- Open Add-ons, then My add-ons, then PVR clients, and choose IPTV Simple Client.
- Choose Configure. Under General, set Location to Remote path and paste the playlist address into M3U play list URL.
- Under EPG, set Location to Remote path and paste the guide address into XMLTV URL.
- Confirm. If the guide stays empty, clear it under Settings, then PVR & Live TV, then Guide, then Clear cache, and let it reload.
Perfect Player
- Open Settings, then General.
- Choose Playlist and enter the M3U address, then choose EPG and enter the XMLTV address.
- Return to the channel list and let the guide download.
MAG box
- Nothing to add. The portal supplies the guide inside the box's own interface.
- If the times are wrong, correct the time zone in the box's system settings.

How these steps were checked
Checked on 2 October 2026. We did not run these steps on a device, and say so because most guides in this niche do not.
- Kodi:setting names are taken from the add-on's own documentation, the IPTV Simple Client README.
- TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, XCIPTV and Perfect Player: none publishes reference documentation, so the menu paths were cross-checked against several independent setup guides. Labels move between app versions; if one differs, look for the nearest setting named EPG or TV guide.
- The guide address pattern is the standard Xtream Codes panel endpoint. Whether a given service leaves it switched on is up to that service.
Three settings worth getting right once
- Update interval. Daily. More often wastes bandwidth and makes the app slow to open; less often leaves gaps at the end of the grid.
- Time offset.Leave it at zero unless every programme is wrong by the same number of hours. Then check the device's own time zone first, because a wrong system clock shifts the whole guide.
- Days to keep. Past guide data only matters if you use catch-up. Keeping one or two past days is enough and keeps the guide database small on a Firestick.
Set it up and the guide is still empty?
Setup and faults are separate problems. If the grid shows no information on every channel, shows the wrong times, or stopped loading after it once worked, go to EPG not working, which covers refreshing, clearing the guide cache and correcting the time offset in each player. For anything that is not about the guide, the best IPTV players compared page links to the setup guide for every player.
EPG setup questions, answered
What is an EPG in IPTV?
EPG stands for electronic programme guide. It is the grid that shows what is on each channel now and next, usually several days ahead. In IPTV it arrives as a separate data file in a format called XMLTV, which the player matches to your channels by an identifier attached to each one.
Do I need an EPG URL if I log in with Xtream Codes?
Normally not. An Xtream Codes login tells the player where the guide is, so TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro and XCIPTV load it without a separate address. You only need a guide address when the player was set up with an M3U playlist, or when the player has no Xtream Codes option at all.
What does an XMLTV EPG URL look like?
On services that run an Xtream Codes panel it follows the pattern server-address/xmltv.php?username=YOUR_USERNAME&password=YOUR_PASSWORD, using the same server address, username and password as your login. If that address returns nothing, ask support for the guide address rather than guessing.
How often should the EPG update?
Once a day is enough. Guide files usually cover several days ahead, so a daily refresh keeps the grid full without the player downloading a large file every time it opens. Set the refresh for a time the device is switched on but nobody is watching.
Why do some channels have no guide data after setup?
Because the guide file has no entry that matches those channels. Matching depends on an identifier in the playlist, and not every channel carries one. This is normal for a share of channels on any service. If most channels are empty, the cause is different and the EPG fault guide covers it.
Can I use a free third-party EPG source?
You can add one as an extra source in players that accept several, such as TiviMate and Kodi. It only helps for channels whose identifiers match that source, so results vary. Start with the guide your service supplies and add an outside source only for channels that stay empty.
