What Is the DStv Explora?

The DStv Explora is the premium end of the DStv decoder range. Where a basic HD Zapper only tunes and displays live channels, the Explora is a full PVR (Personal Video Recorder): it has a hard drive inside, so it can capture programmes to watch later, hold a rolling buffer of live TV for pausing and rewinding, and store catch-up and on-demand titles. It is the box most households picture when they think of “the DStv decoder.”

Beyond recording, the Explora is designed to be the entertainment hub of the living room. It runs the modern DStv interface with a searchable TV Guide, a Recordings library, catch-up sections and — on the newest model — full internet streaming apps. In other words, the Explora tries to combine the reliability of satellite with the convenience of streaming in a single box under the TV. The Explora Models: Ultra, 3 and 2

There are three Explora generations still in circulation. They share the same core idea — a recording satellite decoder — but differ in tuners, interface speed and, crucially, whether they can stream:

Recording to the Built-In Drive

The Explora's headline feature is recording to its built-in 1TB hard drive. Press the record button while a programme is playing, or open the TV Guide, highlight a show and choose record — you can capture a single episode or set a series link that automatically records every episode as it airs. Everything you save lands in the Recordings library, where you can sort, resume and delete titles.

Because the Explora Ultra and Explora 3 have two tuners, you can record two channels at once while watching a third — ideal for a night with two live matches and a series you follow. The single-tuner Explora 2 records one channel and shows it to you at the same time, but can't split across different live channels. A 1TB drive holds hundreds of hours of standard content, though HD and 4K recordings fill it faster, so clearing old titles now and then keeps space free.

Pause & Rewind Live TV, and Catch-Up

Two features make the Explora feel modern even on a satellite feed — live-TV control and catch-up:

• ✓Pause & rewind live TV: The Explora keeps a rolling buffer of the channel you're watching, so you can pause a live broadcast to answer the door and resume where you left off, or rewind to see a goal again — no recording needed in advance.
• ✓Catch-up: A library of recently aired shows and box sets is available on demand through the internet-connected Explora, so you can watch programmes you missed even if you never set a recording for them.
• ✓On-demand & box sets: Beyond catch-up, the Explora carries on-demand movies and full series box sets you can start any time, downloaded to the drive or streamed depending on the title and model.
• ✓Resume across the house: Recordings and catch-up you start on the Explora can often be continued in the DStv app on a phone or tablet, so a paused show follows you out of the living room.

The Explora Ultra: Satellite Meets Streaming

The Explora Ultra is what sets the newest generation apart. It connects to your home Wi-Fi or Ethernet and runs full streaming apps — Netflix, Showmax, YouTube and Prime Video — directly on the decoder. You sign in to each app with your own account, and the Ultra pulls live satellite channels, your recordings and those streaming services into a single home screen. No separate streaming stick, no switching HDMI inputs.

This hybrid approach is MultiChoice's answer to households that want DStv's sport and the streaming apps everyone else uses, without two boxes and two remotes. The trade-off is that the streaming side needs a reliable internet connection — the satellite channels keep working offline, but Netflix and Showmax obviously do not. How to Connect & Activate the Explora

Getting an Explora running follows a clear sequence. Most of it is done once, at install:

   Connect the dish & cabling

   The coaxial cable from your dish's LNB feeds into the Explora's LNB IN. On multi-tuner Exploras this may run through a single-cable multiswitch or two feeds — an accredited installer handles the dish alignment and cabling.

2. 2

   Insert the paired smart card

   Slide in the smart card that came with (or is paired to) the decoder. The card carries your subscription rights; the decoder and card work as a matched pair, so don't swap them between boxes.

3. 3

   Power up & let it update

   Connect HDMI to the TV, power on, and let the Explora download its latest software on first boot. This can take several minutes and is normal — leave it to finish rather than pulling the plug.

   Connect to the internet (Ultra)

   For catch-up, on-demand and — on the Ultra — streaming apps, join the box to Wi-Fi or plug in an Ethernet cable in Settings. Satellite channels work without this, but the smart features need it.

5. 5

   Activate on Self Service

   Register or link the decoder to your DStv account, pay the subscription, and send a reset. Once authorised, channels load in a few minutes.

Connected Decoders & Extra View Multi-Room

One subscription can feed more than one room. DStv Extra View links additional decoders — another Explora or an HD Zapper — to your main account so each TV can watch different channels, all under one package for a small monthly Extra View fee. You pair the extra decoder in DStv Self Service, and the boxes share your subscription rights.

This is how households run the Explora in the lounge and a cheaper Zapper in a bedroom. The main Explora also acts as the recording hub, and where decoders are connected you can often start a recording in one room and manage it from another. If you'd rather not add hardware at all, the DStv app streams your channels and recordings to phones, tablets and second smart TVs at no extra cost on your tier — a lighter alternative to a full Extra View decoder.

Explora vs HD Zapper vs DStv Streama

The Explora is one of several DStv devices. Here is how the recording Exploras stack up against the live-only HD Zapper and the dish-free DStv Streama, so you can match the box to the room:

The short version: choose an Explora Ultra for one box that does satellite, recording and streaming; an Explora 3 or 2 if you want recording without built-in apps; an HD Zapper for a cheap live-only second room; and DStv Streama if you have no dish and want DStv over the internet on a normal TV.
