The short answer
DStv sells six packages that stack from cheapest to richest: EasyView (~R39), Access (~R159), Family (~R329), Compact (~R479), Compact Plus (~R649) and Premium (~R949). For most households Compact is the value sweet spot; sport fans step up to Compact Plus or Premium. This page compares them all in detail — for the wider picture on hardware, streaming and account setup, see our complete DStv guide.
How DStv Packages Work
Every DStv subscription is built around a single decision: which package you choose. A package is a fixed bundle of channels at a fixed monthly price, and the tiers are designed to stack — each higher package includes everything in the one below it, then adds more channels and, crucially, more live sport. That means the only real question is how far up the ladder you need to climb to reach the content you actually watch.
The prices quoted here are indicative South African rates for 2026. MultiChoice reviews them annually — usually in April — and they vary slightly by country, so confirm the live figure on DStv Self Service before you subscribe. If you want the detail on this year's adjustment, we cover it in our note on the 2026 DStv price increase. DStv Packages at a Glance
Here are all six tiers in order, from the cheapest entry point to the full-fat Premium package. Channel counts are approximate and shift as MultiChoice adds and retires channels.
| Package | From / month | Channels | Best for | Sport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EasyView | R39 | 40+ | Cheapest entry — local and starter channels | None |
| Access | R159 | 95+ | Entry-level entertainment and news | Minimal |
| Family | R329 | 115+ | Family viewing, kids and local content | Limited |
| Compact | R479 | 140+ | Best-value all-rounder for most homes | Selected SuperSport |
| Compact Plus | R649 | 155+ | Sport fans who don't need the top movie tier | Most SuperSport |
| Premium | R949 | 175+ | Everything — all sport, all movies, all series | Full SuperSport |
The jumps that matter most are the ones into Compact (where the entertainment line-up gets genuinely broad) and into Compact Plus and Premium (where the live-sport picture changes completely). Everything below Compact is about keeping costs low with a lighter channel set.
Each Package Explained: What You Get and Who It's For
EasyView (~R39)
The cheapest way onto DStv — a starter set of local and general channels with no live sport. Best for a second TV, a budget household, or anyone who just wants a handful of local and news channels for next to nothing.
Access (~R159)
Entry-level entertainment and news with a wider spread than EasyView, plus a little sport. Suits light viewers who want a modest mix of local drama, news and lifestyle channels without paying for the big tiers.
Family (~R329)
The first tier that feels like a full household package. Kids' channels (Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney, JimJam), family drama and local content make it popular with homes that have children but don't need serious sport.
Compact (~R479)
The value sweet spot and DStv's most popular tier. A broad line-up of series, movies and selected SuperSport covers most households comfortably — enough sport for casual fans, plenty of entertainment for everyone else.
Compact Plus (~R649)
Built for sport fans who want more live matches than Compact offers but don't need the full Premium movie tier. Adds most of SuperSport plus extra movie and entertainment channels for a middle-ground price.
Premium (~R949)
The no-compromises tier: every SuperSport channel, the full movie line-up, and every general-entertainment channel DStv carries. Best for heavy sport-and-movie households who want it all and won't miss a single fixture.

Where the Tiers Really Differ: Sport and Movies
For most people the choice between packages comes down to two things — live sport and premium movies. These are the areas where the tiers separate most sharply, and where paying more actually buys you noticeably different content rather than a few extra lifestyle channels.
Live sport (SuperSport) is the single biggest reason people climb the ladder. Full SuperSport access — every live football, rugby, cricket, Formula 1, golf and tennis channel — starts at Premium. Compact Plus carries most of it, Compact carries a selected set, and the tiers below Family carry little or none. If a specific competition is non-negotiable, check exactly which SuperSport channel it airs on before you commit, because that channel's tier decides your minimum package. Our DStv sport guide maps the major competitions to the packages that carry them.
Movies follow the same shape. The richest first-run film and box-set line-up sits on Premium via M-Net and the DStv movie channels, with a strong selection on Compact Plus and Compact, and progressively less below that. If you mostly stream box sets rather than watch live films, this difference may matter less to you than the sport — which is why so many households land on Compact or Compact Plus rather than Premium. For a focused head-to-head on the top two tiers, see our Compact vs Premium comparison.
How to Choose the Right DStv Package
Instead of starting at the top and trimming, start at the bottom and climb only as far as your must-have content forces you. Work through these questions in order:
- 1
Is live sport essential?
If yes, you're looking at Compact at minimum, and Compact Plus or Premium if you follow a lot of football, rugby or cricket. If you rarely watch live sport, you can stay on Family or below and save a large amount every month.
- 2
Do you have kids at home?
The dedicated children's channels start at the Family tier. Households with young children usually want Family as a floor, then step up only if the adults need more sport or movies.
- 3
How much do you watch overall?
For a busy household that watches series, movies and some sport, Compact is the natural fit. For light viewers who mostly want local channels and news, Access or EasyView keeps the bill tiny.
- 4
Do you want everything?
If you refuse to miss a fixture and want the full movie line-up too, Premium is the only tier that delivers it all — but be honest about whether you'll use it before paying the top rate.
Upgrading, Downgrading and Switching Tiers
One of DStv's genuine strengths is that your package isn't locked in. You can change tiers at any time from DStv Self Service on the web or in the app, which makes seasonal switching a smart way to control costs. A common pattern is to run Compact through most of the year, jump to Compact Plus or Premium for a big football or rugby season, then drop back down once it ends.
Two rules make this work cleanly. First, upgrades usually take effect immediately, so if a marquee fixture is coming up you can step up the same day. Second, because DStv bills a full month at a time, time your downgrades for the start of your billing cycle — dropping a tier mid-month still charges you the higher rate until the cycle rolls over. Keeping a reliable payment method on file (a debit order is best) also prevents the mid-month cut-offs that lock you out until the account is settled.
Value Tips: Getting the Most From Your Package
- ✓Don't over-buy sport you won't watch: Premium is only worth it if you genuinely follow enough live sport to fill it. If you watch one competition, check whether Compact or Compact Plus already carries its channel before paying for the top tier.
- ✓Switch tiers around the season: Upgrade for a big sporting season and downgrade afterwards. Because upgrades are instant and downgrades are best timed to the billing cycle, a little planning saves real money.
- ✓Use the app that's already included: Your subscription includes streaming your channels to a phone or tablet at no extra cost, so you may not need a separate service for on-the-go viewing.
- ✓Right-size for the household: Family often covers homes with kids; Compact suits general viewers; Access or EasyView is fine for a second room. Match the tier to how you actually watch.
- ✓Compare against internet TV: If the higher tiers feel expensive for what you use, a no-hardware internet-TV service can cover live sport and huge on-demand libraries for less — worth weighing up before you renew.
If the Premium and Compact Plus prices feel steep for what your household actually watches, it's worth seeing what modern internet TV offers for the money. Start with our roundup of the best internet-TV services, and compare no-dish options in our guide to DStv alternatives.
DStv Packages FAQ
How many DStv packages are there?
There are six main DStv packages: EasyView (around R39), Access (around R159), Family (around R329), Compact (around R479), Compact Plus (around R649) and Premium (around R949). They stack, so each higher tier includes everything below it plus more channels and more live sport. Prices are indicative 2026 South African rates and are reviewed by MultiChoice each year.
Which DStv package is best value?
DStv Compact (around R479) is widely regarded as the best-value tier for a typical household — it carries a broad line-up of series, movies and selected live sport for a mid-range price. If you need more live football and rugby, Compact Plus adds most of SuperSport without the full Premium movie line-up. Only heavy sport-and-movie viewers usually justify Premium.
What is the difference between Compact and Compact Plus?
Compact Plus sits one tier above Compact and exists mainly for sport fans. It adds more SuperSport channels — more live football, rugby and cricket — plus extra movie and entertainment channels, for roughly R170 more per month. If you can watch the sport you want on Compact, there is little reason to pay for Compact Plus.
Can I upgrade or downgrade my DStv package?
Yes. You can change your DStv package at any time from DStv Self Service on the web or in the app. Upgrades usually take effect immediately, while downgrades are best timed for the start of your billing cycle because DStv bills a full month at a time — dropping a tier mid-month still charges you the higher rate for that month.
Which DStv package has the most sport?
DStv Premium (around R949) carries the full SuperSport line-up and every live match DStv broadcasts, making it the best package for sport. Compact Plus is the next best, carrying most SuperSport channels, while Compact offers a selected set. Family, Access and EasyView carry limited or no live sport, so serious sport fans should look at Compact Plus or Premium.
